Cyberwork: cybernization and cyborgization of news production

Abstract:

This talk is based on her recent book, "Cyberfactories. How news agencies produce news" (2012), which is a study of three news agencies: Swedish TT, Italian ANSA and the worldwide Reuters. The focus was on organizing rather than journalism, revealing two accelerating phenomena: cybernization (machines play a more and more central role in news production) and cyborgization (people rely more and more on machines). These technological developments lead to many unexpected consequences and complications, but may be the harbingers of future work - not only in news production.
